India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is on the cutting edge of counter-drone technology with the development of high-power microwave (HPM) weapons. This Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system boasts the potential to neutralize a range of aerial threats.

Internal documents confirm that Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) will be able to effectively take out and disable hobbyist drones and commercially available quadcopters used for malicious purposes. DEW also will be powerful enough to disable Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE)drones, often used for surveillance.

DEW also can be used to take out Pilotless Target Aircraft (PTA) employed for training exercises and disrupt the electronics of incoming cruise missiles, potentially neutralizing them before impact.

A significant challenge lies in developing a robust power source to ensure the effective functionality of DEWs in real-world deployments. Despite these challenges, DRDO’s development of DEWs signifies India’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve in drone defence. While technological hurdles exist, DEWs have the potential to become game-changers in future warfare, offering a non-kinetic and potentially cost-effective solution to counter a growing aerial threat.
