The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is taking a proactive step to protect the Srinagar-Leh highway, a vital artery in Kashmir, with a remotely operated avalanche warning and monitoring system at Zoji La, a high mountain pass known for its treacherous conditions.

This innovative system will rely on a network of infrasonic sensors, capable of detecting sound waves and stress vibrations beyond human hearing range. These sensors, strategically placed along the Sonamarg-Zojila-Tangdhar axis, will act as vigilant sentinels, constantly monitoring for signs of avalanche activity.

Real-time data acquisition and processing units will analyze the sensor readings, transmitting crucial information via GSM and satellite communication. This ensures uninterrupted data flow, even in remote and challenging terrains. Additionally, solar power units will provide sustainable energy for the system, making it independent of external power sources.

The project, executed by the Defence Geo-informatics Research Establishment (DGRE) in Chandigarh, involves gathering data from the remote network and relaying it to their central hub for in-depth analysis. This processed information will then be disseminated as actionable alerts to relevant authorities, allowing them to take timely preventive measures and safeguard lives.

This DRDO initiative represents a significant advancement in avalanche warning technology and highlights India’s commitment to utilizing cutting-edge solutions for disaster mitigation. By harnessing the power of infrasonic sensors and real-time data communication, the system promises to enhance safety along the treacherous Zoji La, ensuring a more secure passage for people and resources in the region.
