The Chinese research vessel, Xiang Yang Hong 03, is once again making its way to the Maldives, marking its third visit to the island nation in 2024. The ship entered the Indian Ocean on Friday and is expected to reach Maldivian waters by Monday, according to local media reports.

The vessel’s previous visits, in February and April, have raised eyebrows in the region, given the Maldives’ strategic location at the crossroads of vital shipping lanes. While the Maldivian government maintains that the ship’s purpose is for crew rotation and replenishment, the frequency of these visits has sparked speculation about the vessel’s true intentions.

The Xiang Yang Hong 03 is considered China’s most advanced research vessel, capable of conducting a wide range of marine studies. Its presence in the Indian Ocean, particularly in the vicinity of the Maldives, has heightened India’s concerns, as the island nation is strategically located close to the Indian mainland.

China has consistently maintained that its research activities in the region are peaceful and compliant with international law. However, India and other regional powers remain vigilant about China’s growing maritime influence in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives’ decision to allow the Chinese vessel to dock, particularly under the pro-China administration of President Mohamed Muizzu, has further amplified geopolitical tensions in the region.
