A terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Fressipora village in Rajpora area of the south Kashmir district following inputs about the presence of terrorists there, they said.

They said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon the forces, who retaliated. In the ensuing encounter, the terrorist was killed, the police said.

A 52-year-old migrant worker was allegedly killed in an attack at a construction site in Shillong’s Mawroh area on Wednesday, police said. Miscreants, who are yet to be identified, attacked three labourers at the private construction site around 11.15 am with a crowbar, they said.

“Due to the assault, one Arjun Ray was severely injured,” SP of East Khasi Hills district Rituraj Ravi said. Ray was admitted to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences where he died, he said.

Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Manipur police, claimed to have apprehended one person and recovered Rs 13,11,130 in cash from his possession. One carbine machine gun, one pistol, one grenade, one shotgun and ammunition were also seized from him. The Assam Rifles, in its statement, said that the apprehended individual has been handed over to the Ukhrul Police Station along with the recoveries. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier, security forces recovered huge arms and ammunition in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, officials said. According to the officials, the Manipur Police, in a joint operation with Assam Rifles, launched a joint search operation on Sunday and recovered one 7.65 mm pistol, 10 grenades, one Kenwood radio set, and one medical kit from an underground hideout.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, twelve Maoists surrendered before security personnel in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Thursday, police said.

The red rebels were operating in Saranda and Kolhan, Asia’s densest Sal forest area. “Twelve Maoists have surrendered before security personnel. They were operating in the Saranda and Kolhan regions and belong to the group of Maoist Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of Rs one crore on his head,” a senior police officer told PTI.

India on Wednesday said it is and will remain Colombo’s most reliable friend and dependable partner as it underlined that New Delhi was willing to offer modern defence equipment to friendly partner countries like Sri Lanka.

Addressing the Second India-Sri Lanka Defence Seminar here, India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, said that like in other areas, India and Sri Lanka were cooperating closely on security and defence matters. “Because of our geography, our security is interlinked and intertwined. And when we speak of security, we must remember that it has acquired a wider meaning than we have traditionally associated with it,” Jha said and added, after the Covid19 pandemic and impact of Russia-Ukraine conflict, it has come to include energy, health, food and even economic security.

Nearly 60,000 Israelis were evacuated from 43 towns that are under attack by Hezbollah missiles, amid fears that the militant group could execute its offensive plan to occupy the Galilee region of northern Israel, an Israeli researcher said on Wednesday.

“The war started here on October 8 and since then, we are under fire from Hezbollah every day with anti-tank missiles, which are accurate missiles that are launched against everybody. They killed an Indian foreign worker as well. 60,000 Israelis were evacuated in 43 towns; 43 towns have become ghost towns since this war started. The situation also affects those who were not evacuated that are living like myself,” the president and founder of Alma Research and Education Centre and former researcher in the Israel Defence Forces Intelligence Corps, Sarit Zehavi told ANI.

The Odisha Police have asked its special security battalion personnel to remove tattoos on their body within 15 days as these skin markings are easily noticeable with uniform and considered “obscene and derogatory”.

The deputy commissioner of police (security), Bhubaneswar issued an order to this effect on Tuesday and asked all officials concerned to prepare a list of SSB men having “easily noticeable tattoos” on their bodies.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed the BJP government at the Centre over the Agnipath scheme, saying an Agniveer recruit who has undergone training for just six months will become a martyr in combat against a Chinese soldier, who is trained for five years. Addressing an election rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol, Gandhi claimed the “Agniveer Yojana” was conceptualised by the prime minister but the Army doesn’t want this scheme.

After coming to power, the Congress will abolish this short-term recruitment scheme for inducting soldiers, he said.
