On the 20th of July, 2024, a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) and Ashok Leyland. This significant event was graced by the esteemed presence of Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and key figures from both organizations, including Shri Sanjay Dwivedi, Chairman and Managing Director of AVNL, and Shri Sanjeev Kumar Bhola, Chief General Manager of VFJ (Vehicle Factory Jabalpur), a unit of AVNL. Representing Ashok Leyland were Shri Krishnan Sadagopan, Senior Vice President, and Shri Ravikanth S, AGM of Defence Vehicles.

The MoU aims to spearhead the collaborative development of Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE)-powered load carriers, specifically designed for the Indian defence forces. This innovative venture marks a pivotal step towards sustainable and advanced defense logistics.

The signing ceremony took place during the Regional Industry Conclave held in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, underscoring the strategic importance of the collaboration. The convergence of AVNL’s expertise in armoured vehicle manufacturing and Ashok Leyland’s prowess in commercial vehicle production sets a robust foundation for the development of state-of-the-art, eco-friendly load carriers.

Dr. Mohan Yadav, in his address, highlighted the significance of this partnership in fostering technological advancements and self-reliance in defense manufacturing. He expressed his optimism about the potential of H2ICE technology in revolutionizing the defense sector, aligning with India’s broader goals of sustainable development and energy security.

Shri Sanjay Dwivedi, Chairman and Managing Director of AVNL, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the collaborative effort as a testament to India’s growing capabilities in defense innovation. He remarked on the strategic alignment of AVNL and Ashok Leyland in driving forward the nation’s defense manufacturing capabilities.

Shri Krishnan Sadagopan, Senior Vice President of Ashok Leyland, articulated the company’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet the evolving needs of the defense sector. He expressed confidence in the synergy between Ashok Leyland’s engineering expertise and AVNL’s deep-rooted experience in armoured vehicle production.
