Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed the establishment of the third defense corridor in the country within Assam. This proposal was put forward to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who responded positively to the idea.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that he discussed the defense corridor issue in detail with the Defense Minister. Currently, India has two defense corridors located in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The establishment of a third corridor in Assam would be a significant development for the state’s defense production capabilities.
In his discussions with the Defense Minister, CM Sarma emphasized the importance of this corridor for Assam, especially after the successful establishment of a semiconductor unit in the state. He stressed that the new defense corridor would boost the local economy and enhance the state’s contribution to national defense production.
The proposal for the Assam defense corridor is still in the preliminary stages, and CM Sarma acknowledged that several factors need to be evaluated before making a final decision. He emphasized that this matter is sensitive and requires careful consideration. However, he expressed optimism about the potential economic benefits that the corridor could bring to Assam.
In addition to the defense corridor proposal, CM Sarma mentioned the acknowledgment in the Union Budget regarding the exacerbation of Assam’s flood problems due to water coming from outside the country. He expressed gratitude to the central government for providing substantial assistance to address this issue, which has been a significant challenge for the state.
The establishment of the third defense corridor in Assam could mark a pivotal moment for the region, potentially transforming its economic landscape and bolstering its role in India’s defense sector.
