A new book, “Paper to Flight,” has been launched in Panaji, offering a fascinating glimpse into the design and development of India’s carrier-borne fighter aircraft, the LCA Navy. Authored by former ADA Director Cmde C D Balaji (Retd), the book provides a comprehensive account of the joint effort by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the Indian Navy.

Speaking at the book launch, Dr V K Aatre, former DRDO chief, emphasized the significance of the LCA Navy program. He recalled the early days of the project, when the ADA team was tasked with preparing a chart for program monitoring. Dr Aatre highlighted the numerous technological breakthroughs achieved during the development of the naval LCA, including the landing gear and arrester hook.

Dr Kota Harinarayana, another former ADA Director, praised the Indian Navy’s unwavering support for the naval program. He expressed his admiration for the book, stating that it would be a valuable resource for future generations, capturing the complexities of the program in a clear and engaging manner.

Cmde Balaji (Retd), the author of “Paper to Flight,” acknowledged the contributions of various entities involved in the LCA Navy program. He shared insights into the challenges faced during the development process, such as the significant changes required to adapt the IAF version of the LCA for naval operations.

The book delves into the technical aspects of the project, including the development of specialized test facilities and the modifications made to the landing gear, arrester hook, and aircraft structure. It also highlights the emotional journey of the team involved in the program.

Rajan Arya, CEO of Pentagon Press, the publisher of the book, expressed his hope that “Paper to Flight” would inspire the public to learn more about the challenges and triumphs of indigenous design and development in India.

Key officials from DRDO, ADA, HAL, the Indian Navy, the Indian Air Force, NAL, private industries, and IDSA were present at the book launch. The book is priced at Rs 995 and is available on Amazon and Flipkart.

“Paper to Flight” is set to become a valuable resource for aerospace enthusiasts, researchers, and students, providing a unique perspective on the development of India’s indigenous carrier-borne fighter aircraft.
