The Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken a significant step towards bolstering self-reliance by issuing a Project Sanction Order to two Indian firms for the indigenous design and development of a Lightning Detection System.

Air Vice Marshal Jitender Singh Sihmar, Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Meteorology), announced the project under the Make-II category, which aims to promote domestic defense manufacturing.

The cutting-edge sensor network will be capable of detecting atmospheric lightning, providing vital early warning to protect military assets and enhance the safety of civil aviation. The data collected from the system will also be shared with civil agencies to aid public safety.

This initiative aligns with the IAF’s broader commitment to reducing its dependence on foreign-made equipment and promoting indigenous defense manufacturing. By developing the Lightning Detection System domestically, the IAF is not only strengthening its operational capabilities but also contributing to the growth of the country’s defense industry.
