The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a significant milestone in India’s aerospace industry with the successful development of indigenous high-pressure compressor (HPC) drums for aero engines. This breakthrough technology will reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and strengthen India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

HPC drums are critical components of aero engines, subjected to extreme stresses and temperatures during operation. Their timely replacement is essential for maintaining engine performance and safety. Traditionally, India has relied on foreign manufacturers for these high-value components.

The DRDO’s Materials Research Laboratory (DMRL) played a pivotal role in developing the indigenous HPC drum technology. By integrating various scientific and knowledge-based tools, DMRL was able to create a forging process capable of producing drums that meet the stringent requirements of aero engines.

The technology developed by DMRL is versatile and can be adapted to produce other similar aero-engine components. The compressor discs produced using this methodology successfully passed all the necessary tests and certifications, including those conducted by the Indian Air Force.

This achievement is a result of collaborative efforts by various agencies, including the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), and the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGAQA).

The development of indigenous HPC drums is a major boost to India’s aerospace industry and demonstrates the country’s capability to produce critical components for advanced military aircraft. It also underscores the DRDO’s commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement in defense manufacturing.
