 Brazilian Navy’s Scorpène-class submarines

Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, the commander of the Brazilian Navy, has expressed interest in collaborating with India in the sector of nuclear-powered submarines, particularly focusing on technical and training aspects.

During a recent interview, Admiral Olsen highlighted Brazil’s advanced capabilities in nuclear technology. The country possesses significant uranium deposits, has mastered enrichment technology, and is nearing completion of small nuclear reactor development.

“Given our advanced state in nuclear technology, we are eager to partner with India in this area,” Admiral Olsen stated. The collaboration could involve knowledge sharing, joint research, and development of nuclear propulsion systems for submarines.

Such a partnership would be mutually beneficial for both countries. India has been investing heavily in its nuclear submarine program and could benefit from Brazil’s expertise in nuclear technology. Conversely, Brazil could leverage India’s experience in submarine design and construction.

Earlier this year in a ceremony the first steel cut of Álvaro Albertoo took place,  Álvaro Albertoo is Brazil’s first nuclear-powered attack submarine that has commenced construction with a planned launch in 2029. Álvaro Albertoo is based on the enlarged Scorpène-class submarine designed with a 6,000-ton displacement that will be propelled by a 48 MW Pressurized water reactor. India already has Two 6,000-ton displacement SSBNs powered by an 83 MW Pressurized water reactor called Arihant class and has two more S4 Class SSBNs in development.

The potential collaboration between Brazil and India in the nuclear-powered submarine sector marks a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties and promoting technological advancements in the region.
