India’s indigenously developed Zorawar Light Tank is gearing up for a series of stringent trials to assess its capabilities in diverse terrains and combat scenarios. The tank, currently housed at L&T’s Hazira facility, will initially be transported to the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) in Avadi for comprehensive testing of its primary 105mm gun.
Subsequently, the Zorawar will be moved to Chandigarh for onward transportation to the Mahe Field Firing Range (MFFR) at Nyoma, strategically located near the India-China Line of Actual Control. This location will serve as the proving ground for the tank’s performance in high-altitude, challenging conditions during the upcoming winter trials.
Following the winter trials, the Zorawar will be subjected to summer trials at the Mahe Field Firing Range (MFFR) in Suratgarh, Rajasthan, to evaluate its performance in extreme heat and arid conditions. These comprehensive trials, spanning the entirety of 2026, are crucial for fine-tuning the tank’s design and ensuring its readiness for production.
Upon successful completion of the trials, the Indian Army plans to procure an initial batch of 59 Zorawar Light Tanks, with a subsequent order for 300 units under consideration. The development of this indigenously designed tank marks a significant milestone in India’s self-reliance in Armoured vehicle technology, addressing the specific requirements of high-altitude warfare.
