The Indian Navy is set to reignite its pursuit of amphibious aircraft to bolster its capabilities in the Andaman and Nicobar Command and enhance disaster relief efforts. The naval force plans to reissue a Request for Information (RFI) seeking suitable aircraft for these roles.
The Navy had previously issued an RFI in 2011, which garnered interest from Russia and Japan. ShinMaywa Industries Ltd. from Japan offered its US-2 amphibious aircraft, a prospect that initially excited the Indian Navy due to the potential for technology transfer and local manufacturing.
However, these plans were eventually shelved after it became apparent that acquiring the necessary technology to produce 11-15 aircraft domestically would be a formidable challenge requiring higher local investment.
HAL, India’s state-owned aerospace giant, had proposed developing an amphibious variant of its Do-228 aircraft. Likely, HAL will once again offer this option when the new RFI is issued.
The Indian Navy is faced with a complex decision. While Indigenous development holds significant strategic appeal, it also comes with inherent risks and delays. On the other hand, acquiring foreign-made aircraft offers quicker solutions but raises concerns about technology dependence.
It remains uncertain whether Russia will re-offer its Be-200 amphibious aircraft. The evolving geopolitical landscape and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could influence Moscow’s decision.
The Indian Navy’s search for an amphibious aircraft is driven by the need for a versatile platform capable of operating in challenging environments, transporting troops, delivering critical supplies, and conducting humanitarian missions. The outcome of this renewed procurement effort will have far-reaching implications for the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
