Adani Defence & Aerospace has emerged victorious in the race for the Netra II project, a significant development for India’s aerial defense capabilities. Adani Defence & Aerospace has been has been declared as the L1 entity for integration and delivery of various sensors in the project along with DRDO.

Centre For Air Borne System (CABS) of DRDO that has developed the most of the primarily and Secondary sensors will be Transferring its ToT for further Production to the firm. The Netra II project will see development of six Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. These advanced systems act as force multipliers, offering unmatched capabilities in detecting and tracking airborne threats like enemy aircraft, missiles, and drones.

Compared to its predecessor, Netra Mark I, Netra II boasts a wider coverage area of 300 degrees, achieved through a combination of dorsal and nose-cone radar systems. The system uses a powerful 4D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) multi-mode radar, capable of operating in both air-to-air and air-to-sea modes. This advanced radar incorporates S-band and X-band functionalities.

A key improvement of Netra II is its ability to track ballistic missiles, bolstering India’s overall anti-ballistic missile defense system. Netra II will leverage pre-owned Airbus A321 aircraft, offering a larger and more powerful platform compared to the Embraer-145 used in Netra Mark I.

As per DRDO officials deliveries of the six Netra II AEW&C aircraft are expected to begin in 2025 and conclude by 2028. IAF is also looking to place repeat orders for Six more Embraer-145-based AEW&C to be called Netra Mark IA which will be an upgraded variant similar to the Netra II build on Embraer Platform instead of Airbus.
