The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed, through Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, that progress is being made on the indigenously developed HAL Prachand (LCH) attack helicopter. While 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) models are currently undergoing evaluation by both the IAF and the Indian Army, some minor issues are being addressed.
The IAF has identified some areas for improvement on the LCH platform. These are categorized as “minor issues” and are currently being addressed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the manufacturer. Additionally, the IAF and Indian Army have jointly requested further enhancements to the Prachanda’s capabilities.
Despite the identified areas for improvement, the evaluation process involving 15 Limited Series Production (LSP) Prachands seems positive. Encouraged by the LCH’s performance, both the IAF and the Indian Army have submitted a request to the Ministry of Defence for the procurement of 156 additional Prachands.
The additional helicopters are intended to bolster India’s combat capabilities along the borders with China. The Prachand’s manoeuvrability and firepower are seen as crucial for effective border defence in high-altitude regions.
The requested improvements reportedly include additional weapon capabilities for the Prachand. This would further equip the helicopter to handle various combat scenarios and enhance its overall effectiveness.
The IAF and Indian Army’s joint request for more Prachand with improvements signifies their confidence in the platform’s potential. The addition of these helicopters will significantly strengthen India’s aerial defence capabilities, particularly in border regions.
