The Kalyani Group, a leading Indian defence contractor, has embarked on an ambitious project to bolster the Indian Navy’s firepower. The company is currently designing and developing three indigenous naval guns under the Make-I category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020. This government-funded initiative aims to reduce India’s reliance on foreign arms imports.

Kalyani Group officials, in talks with idrw.org, expressed their desire to translate their proven expertise in artillery guns to the naval domain. The company aims to deliver world-class naval guns tailored to the Indian Navy’s specific requirements.

The Make-I program will see the Kalyani Group develop the following naval guns:

  • 127mm Gun: Designed for large warships, offering significant firepower.
  • 76mm Gun: Suited for medium-sized warships, providing a versatile weapon system.
  • 30mm Gun: Intended for smaller warships, offering close-in defence capabilities.

The Kalyani Group’s venture aligns with the Indian government’s push for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) in the defence sector. By developing indigenous naval guns, India aims to reduce reliance on imports and gain technological self-sufficiency in this critical area.

The development of these naval guns is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy’s warships across a range of combat scenarios.

The Kalyani Group brings a wealth of experience in the design and manufacture of artillery systems to this project. This expertise puts them in a strong position to successfully develop naval guns that meet the highest standards of performance and reliability.
