The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) is planning to convert its Multi-Caliber Individual Weapon System (MCIWS) rifle into a Single Caliber Individual Weapon System (SCAWS) of caliber 6.8mm and 7.62mm (39 & 51). This move is aimed at addressing the Indian Army’s requirements for a more versatile and effective rifle.
The MCIWS rifle was developed by ARDE in response to the Indian Army’s need for a rifle that could fire different calibers of ammunition. The rifle can currently fire 5.56mm x 45mm, 7.62mm x 39mm, and 6.8mm x 43mm ammunition.
However, the Indian Army has expressed concerns about the complexity of the MCIWS rifle and its ability to effectively fire all three calibers of ammunition. As a result, ARDE is planning to convert the rifle into a SCAWS of caliber 6.8mm and 7.62mm (39 & 51).
The 6.8mm cartridge is a more modern and effective cartridge than the 5.56mm cartridge. It has a higher muzzle velocity and a flatter trajectory, which makes it more accurate at longer ranges. The 7.62mm (39 & 51) cartridges are also more effective than the 7.62mm x 54mmR cartridge, which is currently used by the Indian Army.
The conversion of the MCIWS rifle into a SCAWS will provide the Indian Army with a more versatile and effective rifle that is better suited to its needs. The rifle will be able to fire two calibers of ammunition, which will allow soldiers to choose the most appropriate cartridge for the task at hand.
ARDE is expected to complete the conversion of the MCIWS rifle into a SCAWS within the next few years. Once the conversion is complete, the rifle will be put through a series of trials before it is inducted into the Indian Army.
This is a significant development for the Indian Army, as it will provide them with a more modern and effective rifle that is better suited to their needs. The SCAWS will be a valuable addition to the Indian Army’s arsenal.
