The Kaveri engine project, launched by India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), was envisioned to power indigenous fighter jets like the Tejas. However, despite decades of research and development, the Kaveri engine failed to meet the performance requirements for fighter jets, particularly in generating sufficient thrust. While the program has produced valuable technological know-how, the engine still lacks the thrust-to-weight ratio needed for modern fighter platforms. To unlock the full potential of this technology and foster future innovations, it’s time for the Indian government to consider transferring Kaveri engine core technology to private sector companies.

By empowering India’s private aerospace sector with the Kaveri engine core, the country can take a page from China’s successful aerospace model, where multiple companies compete to improve engine performance, resolve technological bottlenecks, and develop higher-thrust engines. This approach not only accelerates innovation but also addresses the critical issue of India’s reliance on foreign engines for its military aircraft.

In a recent interview with News9 Plus, former Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria shared his vision for the Indian Air Force (IAF) over the next 20 years, outlining a roadmap that includes a significant shift in the fleet composition. Central to his vision is the eventual retirement of the older Su-30MKI fighter jets, which were first inducted in 2001, and the rise of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Mk II, India’s indigenous 5.5 generation stealth fighter.

According to idrw.org, the IAF is expected to start retiring nearly 100 Su-30MKIs from around 2045 onwards, focusing on the early variants inducted in the early 2000s. By this time, the AMCA Mk II production will have reached full swing, with at least 4-5 squadrons of the stealth aircraft already operational.

There was no substantive discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on the the sidelines of ASEAN Summit in Loas, sources said on Friday, noting that New Delhi continues to expect that anti-India activities will not be allowed to take place on Canadian soil and firm action will be taken against those advocating violence, extremism and terrorism. Sources also said that India attaches importance to relations with Canada but these cannot be repaired unless the Canadian government takes strict action against those who actively pursue anti-India activities.

Trudeau had earlier said that he had a “brief exchange” with Prime Minister Modi in Laos. “I emphasized that there is work that we need to do,” Trudeau told reporters at a press conference in Laos. “I won’t go into details about what we talked about, but what I’ve said many times is that the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any Canadian government, and that’s what I’ll stay focused on,” Canada-based CBC News quoted him as saying.
