The Royal Moroccan Army has recently expressed interest in acquiring India’s next-generation Akash-NG air defense system, according to a report by Hespress, a prominent Moroccan online news outlet. This development follows a visit by an Indian military delegation to the Kingdom, where they showcased a range of advanced military technologies, including Arjun main battle tanks and combat drones. However, it is the Akash-NG system that has captured Morocco’s attention, owing to its impressive performance, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability to modern aerial threats.
The Akash-NG, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics (BEL), is an advanced surface-to-air missile system designed for the Indian Air Force. Capable of intercepting a variety of targets—including fighter jets, drones, and ballistic missiles—at ranges exceeding 70 kilometers, the system stands out for its lightweight design, rapid response time, and direct strike capability. These features make it a compelling option for Morocco, which is seeking to bolster its defenses against evolving aerial threats.
Compared to its predecessor, the Akash-NG represents a significant technological leap, offering enhanced precision and efficiency. A key highlight of India’s offer is the inclusion of a technology transfer agreement, which would allow Morocco to locally produce certain components of the system. This arrangement could strengthen Morocco’s domestic defense industry, create jobs, and reduce its reliance on imported military hardware—a strategic advantage for the Kingdom.
Morocco has been actively modernizing its air defense arsenal in recent years, acquiring systems from various global suppliers to address a wide range of threats. In 2017, the Kingdom purchased the Sky Dragon, a medium-range surface-to-air missile system from China’s NORINCO. With a range of 50 kilometers and the ability to engage targets at altitudes between 30 meters and 20 kilometers, the Sky Dragon is deployed to protect sensitive installations from aerial attacks.
More recently, Morocco acquired the Barak MX system from Israel Aerospace Industries. This advanced system, designed to counter missiles, drones, and other threats at ranges of up to 150 kilometers, became part of Morocco’s arsenal with training programs launched for its personnel. It is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2023, enhancing the Kingdom’s ability to defend against long-range threats.
Additionally, Morocco has procured the FD-2000B, a long-range air defense system from China. Capable of engaging airborne and ballistic targets at distances of up to 200 kilometers and altitudes of 30 kilometers, the FD-2000B is equipped with a powerful radar that can detect threats at a range of 280 kilometers. This system underscores Morocco’s commitment to building a layered defense network.
While Morocco’s existing systems provide robust coverage, the Akash-NG offers a unique combination of affordability, versatility, and technological collaboration that aligns with the Kingdom’s defense priorities. Its 70-kilometer range positions it between the Sky Dragon and the Barak MX in terms of reach, while its ability to tackle modern threats like drones and ballistic missiles complements Morocco’s current capabilities. The prospect of local production further sweetens the deal, potentially fostering industrial growth and self-reliance.
