In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness and indigenisation efforts, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has announced that several indigenous weapon systems developed by DRDO are slated for induction into the Indian Armed Forces within the next six months to one year.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Kamat stated, “In the next six months to one year, you will see many of our systems getting inducted,” signaling a significant step forward in the self-reliance initiative under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. Among the systems set for induction are the Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) missile system and the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM), both critical for enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.
The VSHORAD system, developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad, is designed to provide short-range air defence against low-flying aerial threats such as helicopters, UAVs, and low-altitude fighter aircraft. The system is shoulder-fired, portable, and equipped with advanced technologies including a dual-thrust rocket motor, miniaturized reaction control system, and integrated avionics.
The successful flight tests of the VSHORAD missile in recent months have paved the way for its production and deployment along India’s borders. Once inducted, it will significantly reduce reliance on imported short-range air defence systems.
The Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM), also developed by DRDO, is a third-generation fire-and-forget missile system designed to destroy modern armored tanks with explosive reactive armor. Compact, lightweight, and operable by a two-man crew, the MPATGM offers Indian infantry a vital edge in anti-armor operations, particularly in rugged and mountainous terrains.
The MPATGM has undergone multiple successful test firings, demonstrating its accuracy, lethality, and readiness for induction. It will gradually replace existing second-generation anti-tank missiles in the Indian Army’s inventory.
Dr. Kamat’s statement underscores DRDO’s accelerating momentum in transitioning from development to deployment. Beyond VSHORAD and MPATGM, several other indigenous platforms such as loitering munitions, advanced radar systems, and unmanned systems are also in advanced stages of testing and production.
