The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sparked controversy by refusing to disclose data on manpower shortages within the Armed Forces, citing national security concerns. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth asserted that revealing such information would be detrimental to the nation’s interests.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, with Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge highlighting the government’s previous practice of releasing data on vacancies and questioning the rationale behind the sudden change in stance.

The demand for transparency comes amidst growing concerns over the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on recruitment and the potential implications of the Agnipath scheme on the overall strength of the armed forces. While the MoD has previously acknowledged the challenges posed by the pandemic, the current refusal to provide concrete figures has raised eyebrows.

Experts and analysts have expressed apprehension over the potential consequences of manpower shortages on the armed forces’ readiness and operational capabilities, especially given the prevailing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The opposition has called for greater clarity on the government’s plans to address the manpower crisis and ensure the armed forces are adequately equipped to safeguard the nation’s security.
