A significant milestone was achieved in India’s space sector as ISRO Chairman S Somanath announced the successful completion of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) development process. The agency is now set to transfer this crucial technology to Indian industries, marking a pioneering step in the country’s space journey.
Speaking to reporters post the successful launch of the SSLV, Somanath emphasized that this is the first time such advanced technology is being shared with the private sector in India. The move is expected to bolster the capabilities of Indian industries, enabling them to build smaller rockets and contribute substantially to the nation’s burgeoning space economy.
Designed as a cost-effective solution, the SSLV is capable of launching satellites weighing up to 500 kg into Low Earth Orbit. Its compact design, comprising three solid propulsion stages and a liquid terminal stage, offers advantages like rapid launch readiness and minimal infrastructure requirements.
Somanath highlighted that the SSLV’s simplicity is a key factor that will facilitate efficient production by Indian companies. This transfer of technology is seen as a game-changer for the country’s space technology ecosystem.
While the SSLV’s journey has had its challenges, including a near-failure in its first launch, the recent successful missions have solidified its reliability. The commercial arm of ISRO, NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), will now take over the production of the SSLV.
This development is expected to open new avenues for private players in the space sector, fostering competition and innovation, and ultimately propelling India to greater heights in space exploration.
