The Indian Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, has arrived at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for a short refit and dry docking, marking another critical milestone in its operational lifecycle. This comes as part of a comprehensive maintenance and modernization agreement between the Union Ministry of Defence and the shipyard, valued at ?1,207.5 crore.
The project will involve extensive upgrades and ensure the carrier remains in peak operational condition, enabling it to continue serving as a vital component of India’s maritime security framework.
The refit and dry docking activities will provide a significant boost to over 50 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), both in Kerala and internationally. These industries are expected to contribute specialized components, services, and expertise for the maintenance and upgrades. This initiative will also bolster the “Make in India” program by emphasizing local industrial participation and innovation in defense projects.
INS Vikramaditya, a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier, has been a cornerstone of the Indian Navy’s power projection capabilities since its induction in 2013. Housing a fleet of MiG-29K fighter jets and advanced surveillance systems, it plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and conducting joint exercises with global navies.
The short refit and dry docking at Cochin Shipyard will not only enhance the carrier’s operational readiness but also ensure its longevity as a key asset in the Navy’s arsenal. With upgrades and maintenance handled by one of India’s premier shipyards, the Indian Navy is poised to maintain its edge in the Indo-Pacific region.
