INS Kamorta, an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvette and the first of its class in the Indian Navy’s Sunrise Fleet, celebrated its 10th anniversary on August 23, 2024. Indigenously designed by the Indian Navy Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, INS Kamorta has been a symbol of India’s growing maritime capabilities and technological prowess.

Since her commissioning on August 23, 2014, INS Kamorta has played a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. Named after the Kamorta Island in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, the ship is designed to undertake a range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and coastal defense. Over the past decade, INS Kamorta has demonstrated exceptional versatility and adaptability in various operational scenarios, living up to her motto, “Shatrunam Sanghataka,” which translates to “Vanquisher of Enemies.”

INS Kamorta is the first of the four ASW corvettes built under Project 28. The ship represents a significant achievement in India’s efforts toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The design and development of INS Kamorta were led by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, which incorporated state-of-the-art technology and modern warfare capabilities. The ship’s construction was undertaken by GRSE Kolkata, one of the leading shipyards in India with a long history of building warships for the Indian Navy.

The corvette features an array of indigenous systems, including advanced stealth capabilities, a high level of automation, and a robust weapons suite. The use of indigenous steel and high-performance composite materials for the superstructure significantly enhances its stealth and survivability. These features make INS Kamorta a formidable platform for detecting, tracking, and neutralizing enemy submarines.

Throughout its decade of service, INS Kamorta has participated in numerous naval exercises, both domestic and international, enhancing interoperability and demonstrating the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities. The ship has been a part of several key missions, showcasing its prowess in anti-submarine warfare and contributing significantly to maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean Region.
