In a significant boost to India’s naval prowess, the indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Arighat, is poised for its official induction into the Indian Navy. After undergoing rigorous trials and incorporating crucial upgrades based on the Indian Navy’s feedback, this formidable vessel is set to join the fleet by the end of 2024.
The journey of INS Arighat has been marked by challenges. The project encountered technical hurdles, which have now been successfully addressed. The submarine’s commissioning is a testament to the determination and expertise of Indian engineers and scientists.
As the second SSBN in India’s arsenal, Arighat joins its predecessor, INS Arihant, which was commissioned in 2016. Two more SSBNs, currently designated S4 and S4*, are under construction. All these submarines are being built at the Indian Navy’s Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.
Powered by an indigenously developed 82.5 MW pressurised light water reactor with Russian assistance, Arighat boasts impressive capabilities. With a top speed of 24 knots submerged and 10 knots surfaced, this stealthy submarine is a formidable addition to the Indian Navy.
The induction of INS Arighat marks a significant milestone in India’s strategic deterrence capabilities. It underscores the nation’s growing self-reliance in advanced naval technology and its commitment to safeguarding national security.
