In a significant stride towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing, India has successfully rolled out the first prototype of the Zorawar Light Tank. The Indian Defence Ministry has confirmed that the entire development and production of this initial prototype was completed at a remarkably low cost of Rs 234.5 crores.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy due to the expedited timeline of the project, transitioning from the drawing board to the first prototype in just two years. The Zorawar Light Tank is poised to be a game-changer for the Indian Army, especially in high-altitude regions.
Equipped with a potent Belgian Cockerill 105mm high-pressure gun and a robust 750Hp Cummins engine, the Zorawar is designed for superior firepower and mobility. The tank’s hull, entirely indigenized by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), marks a significant milestone in domestic defense technology.
Looking ahead, the production phase is slated to commence in 2027, with an estimated unit cost of around 10% of the total project expenditure. This cost-effective approach underlines India’s commitment to building a strong defense industrial base while ensuring optimal resource utilization.
The Zorawar Light Tank is set to enhance the Indian Army’s capabilities in challenging terrains, providing a crucial edge in potential future conflicts.
