The Indian Navy has received the green light to place orders for the P17B frigates, a follow-on class to the Nilgiri-class frigates currently under construction. As part of the Next Generation series of future frontline surface combatants, the P17B class is expected to significantly enhance the navy’s capabilities. However, the staggering cost of $1.19 billion per ship has raised eyebrows among defense analysts in India.
The P17B frigates are estimated to cost a significant 50% more than their predecessors, the P15B frigates. This substantial increase in price has led to comparisons with the Talwar-class frigates, which could have been acquired in greater numbers for the same cost.
While the exact configuration of the P17B frigates remains undisclosed, it is anticipated that they will feature a more robust armament package. This increased firepower is likely to include at least 48 vertical launch cells, capable of accommodating long-range surface-to-air missiles (LRSAM) with a range exceeding 250 kilometers.
The higher price tag for the P17B frigates can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the increased weapon load and advanced technologies incorporated into these ships contribute to the higher cost. Secondly, the project cost includes base and depot spares for the entire lifespan of the ships, estimated to be between 20 and 25 years. This component accounts for approximately 15-20% of the total project cost.
Despite the higher price, the P17B frigates are expected to provide the Indian Navy with a significant upgrade in terms of firepower and capabilities. By acquiring these ships, the navy will be able to maintain its naval dominance in the region and effectively address emerging threats.
