The Indian Navy is set for a significant expansion of its fleet, with the delivery of 12 new warships scheduled over the next 12 months.

These additions, ranging from destroyers and frigates to submarines, corvettes, and survey vessels, will bolster the Navy’s operational capabilities and enhance its maritime presence.

Destroyers

INS Surat (December 2024): The fourth and final ship of the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, INS Surat, will add significant firepower to the Navy’s surface fleet with its advanced missile systems and versatile operational capabilities.

INS Visakhapatnam (December 2024): This stealth guided-missile destroyer is the lead ship of the Visakhapatnam-class, also known as the P-15B class. It is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles.

Frigates

INS Tamala (February 2025): Another Talwar-class frigate, INS Tamala, will join the fleet in early 2025, providing additional strength and flexibility to the Indian Navy’s surface fleet.

INS Nilgiri (December 2024): Part of the Project 17A series, INS Nilgiri is the lead ship of this class of stealth frigates designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and surface warfare capabilities.

INS Udaygiri (March 2025): Another ship from the Project 17A class, INS Udaygiri will feature advanced stealth technologies, integrated radar systems, and versatile weaponry to strengthen the Navy’s surface combat fleet.

INS Himgiri (August 2025): Continuing the Project 17A line-up, INS Himgiri will be delivered in mid-2025, further reinforcing the Navy’s ability to conduct multi-dimensional maritime operations.

INS Tushil (September 2024): A new addition to the Talwar-class frigates, INS Tushil will be equipped with modern weapons and sensors, enhancing the Indian Navy’s surface combat capabilities.

Submarines

INS Vagsheer (December 2024): The final submarine in the Kalvari-class (Scorpene-class) of diesel-electric attack submarines, INS Vagsheer, will enhance the Navy’s underwater warfare capabilities with its stealth, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Corvettes

INS Mahe (August 2025): The second ASW-SWC corvette, INS Mahe, will be delivered in mid-2025, continuing to strengthen the Navy’s ability to detect and neutralize underwater threats in shallow waters.

INS Arnala (November 2024): The lead ship of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) project, INS Arnala, is set to be delivered in late 2024. These ships are designed for coastal anti-submarine operations, offering a significant boost to the Navy’s coastal defense capabilities.

Survey Vessels

INS Sanshodhak (June 2025): The final vessel in the Sandhayak-class survey ship series, INS Sanshodhak, will be delivered in mid-2025, further supporting the Navy’s extensive maritime research and survey missions.

INS Nirdeshak (August 2024): Part of the Sandhayak-class of survey vessels, INS Nirdeshak will provide the Navy with advanced hydrographic capabilities, supporting maritime operations and ensuring safe navigation.

INS Ikshak (March 2025): Another Sandhayak-class survey vessel, INS Ikshak, will enhance the Navy’s hydrographic survey and maritime data collection capabilities.

The delivery of these 12 warships marks a significant step forward for the Indian Navy’s modernization efforts. With the addition of advanced destroyers, frigates, submarines, corvettes, and survey vessels, the Navy will be better equipped to safeguard India’s maritime interests across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This fleet expansion will enhance the Navy’s capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, maritime patrol, and hydrographic surveying, thus ensuring a strong and versatile maritime force ready to face future challenges.
