The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) ambitious plan to acquire 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) is finally nearing a crucial stage. As per reports from idrw.org, the IAF is expected to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to interested vendors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) by mid 2025 or early 2026.

This long-awaited RFP is likely to see proposals from leading global aviation giants, including:

However, the procurement process is not without its hurdles. Here’s a breakdown of the anticipated timeline:

Vetting Process: Once the RFP is issued, a thorough vetting process for all proposals is expected to take a year or more. This ensures each contender meets the IAF’s stringent technical and operational requirements.

Technical Evaluation: Shortlisted bidders will then undergo a technical evaluation round, which could take another year. This will involve in-depth analysis of each aircraft’s capabilities and suitability for the IAF’s needs.

Selection and Negotiation: The final winner is likely to be announced by late 2026. However, the deal’s conclusion hinges on negotiation rounds regarding price and Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreements. This stage could extend into late 2027, assuming smooth negotiations.

Delivery and Production: If the contract is finalized by 2026-27, the “Make in India” aspect kicks in. The first indigenously produced fighter jet could roll out of the production line by late 2029 or early 2030.

This timeline highlights the complex and time-consuming nature of such large-scale defense acquisitions. The IAF aims to modernize its fighter fleet and bridge the gap between its existing Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and legacy Su-30MKI fighters.
