The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army (IA) have taken significant steps towards bolstering their light helicopter fleet through the procurement of the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH Mk-I). In a recent update to the Standing Committee on Defence (SCOD), details regarding the progress of this project were shared, reflecting a joint effort to enhance operational capabilities in high-altitude and utility roles.

The Indian Army is currently processing a case for the joint procurement of 12 LUH Mk-I helicopters, with an allocation of 6 helicopters each for the IAF and the IA.

Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded on November 23, 2021, marking the formal recognition by the Ministry of Defence that there is a legitimate requirement for these helicopters. Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) approval was granted by the Director General (Acquisition) on January 11, 2023, confirming that the LUH Mk-I meets the technical specifications and operational needs set forth by the services.

The project is now at the Contract Negotiation Committee (CNC) stage, where terms, conditions, and pricing will be finalized with the manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The LUH Mk-I is designed to replace the aging fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which have been in service for decades. It’s optimized for operations in India’s challenging terrains, particularly the high-altitude regions near the borders with Pakistan and China.

With a service ceiling of 6.5 km and a range of 350 km, the LUH Mk-I can perform roles such as reconnaissance, troop transportation, casualty evacuation, and logistics support. Its agility and ability to operate in diverse conditions make it a versatile asset for both the IAF and the IA.

This helicopter marks a step towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing, with HAL developing the LUH based on indigenous technology. This not only supports the “Make in India” initiative but also reduces dependence on foreign suppliers for military hardware.
