India has achieved a significant milestone in its technological advancement with the successful development of large cryopumping technology. This indigenous capability is set to revolutionize various sectors, including space research, nuclear science, and semiconductor manufacturing. This work has been done at the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, under the Dept. of Atomic Energy (DAE).

Achieving and maintaining high to ultra-high vacuum conditions is crucial for several critical applications. However, until recently, India relied heavily on imports for large cryopumps, essential components in vacuum systems. Recognizing the strategic importance of this technology, domestic efforts were initiated to bridge this gap.

Indian scientists and engineers have successfully developed 250mm, 400mm, and 500mm opening cryopumps to cater to the demanding requirements of large-scale vacuum systems. These pumps have been deployed in high-profile projects such as:

Cryovac chambers for SAC, ISRO: The space sector benefits immensely from this technology, as cryopumps are vital for satellite testing and launch vehicle preparation.

HHFT Facility: A critical component in this advanced research facility, the cryopumps ensure the ultra-high vacuum conditions necessary for experiments.

SST-1 Fusion Reactor: This indigenously developed fusion reactor relies on the robust performance of these large cryopumps to maintain the required vacuum environment for plasma confinement.

The successful development of large cryopumps is just the beginning. India is poised to expand its capabilities in vacuum technology and explore new applications. With continued investment in research and development, the country can become a global leader in this critical field.

This breakthrough underscores India’s growing prowess in high-tech manufacturing and its commitment to self-reliance. It is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of Indian scientists and engineers who have overcome significant challenges to achieve this remarkable feat.
