The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is deploying advanced surveillance technologies, including human-detection radars and seismic sensors, to strengthen security along India’s border with Pakistan. This high-tech initiative aims to counter infiltration, smuggling, and tunnel-based threats, addressing vulnerabilities in one of the world’s most sensitive border regions.

According to MHA sources, the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) incorporates a network of cutting-edge tools such as human-detection radars, thermal imaging, high-resolution cameras, and seismic sensors designed to detect underground tunnels. These systems are complemented by micro-Doppler radars, which excel in obscured environments like fog, smoke, or walls, enhancing surveillance capabilities. Floodlighting, smart fencing, and watchtowers every 270 meters further fortify the border, with tech-enabled patrols monitoring riverine stretches.

Officials involved in the project report that human-detection radars, integrated with cameras and a command-and-control system, have proven effective in real-time monitoring. Seismic sensors are being tested to detect tunnels, a tactic historically used by terrorists to cross from Pakistan into India. The MHA has already implemented these systems in select border stretches, with ongoing experiments to introduce newer equipment to address evolving threats.

The CIBMS has completed two pilot projects covering 71 kilometers—10 kilometers along the India-Pakistan border and 61 kilometers along the India-Bangladesh border. These projects feature state-of-the-art tools like infra-red and laser-based intruder alarms, aerostats for aerial surveillance, and fiber-optic sensors, all feeding data to a centralized command system for rapid response.

The Border Security Force (BSF) is also employing ground-penetrating radars and anti-drone systems to enhance vigilance, particularly in Jammu, where two battalions have been deployed for area domination. Sensitive infiltration points are equipped with pan-tilt-zoom cameras and smart fencing, while drone jamming and neutralization technologies have reduced narcotics smuggling, with fewer drug recoveries reported this year.

This technological push comes amid heightened regional tensions. India’s focus on border security aligns with its broader defense strategy, as evidenced by recent advancements like the successful test of a long-range hypersonic missile, which has raised concerns in Pakistan and China. Additionally, diplomatic friction persists, with India rejecting Pakistan’s comments on Jammu and Kashmir and accusing it of sponsoring cross-border terrorism.
