Initial assessments by Indian Air Force (IAF) officials suggest that the Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft might be the most feasible option for its Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) program, according to IAF sources speaking to idrw.org.
Speaking on condition of anonymity to idrw.org, IAF officials highlighted the C-390M’s design as a key factor in its favour. These officials believe the C-390M’s design offers greater potential for multi-role development compared to that can be used to develop Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) or Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) platforms.
Embraer already has proposed co-developing a new variant of the C-390M that could fulfil diverse requirements for the IAF. These variants include a weaponized maritime patrol variant, a mini-tanker role for aerial refuelling, and an ISTAR platform (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance).
The IAF is currently evaluating responses to its Request for Information (RFI) from various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Airbus has offered its A400M Atlas, while Lockheed Martin has proposed the C-130J Super Hercules.
Factors Favoring the C-390M
Sources suggest that the IAF might favour the C-390M due to several factors:
- Multi-role Flexibility: The C-390M’s design is considered more adaptable for future modifications into the different variants proposed by Embraer.
- Co-development Opportunity: Collaborating with Embraer on a new variant offers the IAF greater control over the development process and potential for technology transfer.
- Cost-Effectiveness: The C-390M is reportedly offered at a more competitive price point compared to some of its competitors.
The Road Ahead
The IAF is still in the initial stages of evaluating the proposals received through the RFI process. A thorough assessment of each aircraft’s capabilities, potential for future upgrades, and life-cycle costs will be conducted before a final decision is made.
The selection of the MTA will significantly impact the IAF’s future airlift and strategic mobility capabilities. The chosen aircraft will need to be versatile, reliable, and cost-effective to meet the evolving needs of the Indian defence establishment.
