The first Tejas Mk1A fighter jet, which successfully completed its maiden flight in March this year, is set to be handed over to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by the end of next month. This significant milestone marks a key step forward in the Tejas program, which aims to modernize the IAF’s fighter fleet.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been working diligently to complete the final touches on the Tejas Mk1A, including implementing software advancements requested by the IAF. While the initial batch of jets will be powered by the older Category Be Severed F-404 engines, HAL plans to transition to more powerful engines in future batches.
The IAF has ambitious plans to expand its Tejas fleet and is expected to raise a third LCA-Tejas squadron. This new squadron will be deployed at Nal airbase in Rajasthan’s Bikaner, near the Pakistan border. The induction of the Tejas Mk1A jets will bolster the IAF’s capabilities and enhance its operational readiness.
The delivery of the first Tejas Mk1A jet is a significant milestone for both HAL and the IAF. It demonstrates the progress made in the Tejas program and highlights the potential of this indigenous fighter aircraft to meet the IAF’s evolving requirements.
