The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has confirmed the initiation of development for an Active Protection System (APS) tailored for India’s T-90 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). Having received clearance last year, the fabrication phase is now underway, with system testing slated to commence either later this year or early next year.
An APS is a crucial defensive suite designed to detect, track, and intercept incoming threats such as anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and tank rounds before they can inflict damage. This system significantly enhances a tank’s survivability on the modern battlefield.
Benefits of APS for T-90 Tanks:
- Enhanced Survivability: The primary advantage of an APS is its ability to protect the tank from a wide range of incoming threats, significantly improving the crew’s chances of survival.
- Deterrent Effect: The mere presence of an APS can deter potential adversaries from launching attacks, as they know their weapons might be intercepted.
- Countermeasures Against Advanced Threats: Modern tanks face increasingly sophisticated threats, including ATGMs with advanced guidance systems. An APS can effectively counter these threats.
- Protection of Critical Components: An APS can safeguard vital tank components, such as the turret and engine, from damage, allowing the tank to continue operating even after being hit.
The integration of an APS into the T-90 fleet will undoubtedly bolster the Indian Army’s armored capabilities and provide a decisive edge in future conflicts.
