The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to commence developmental trials of the ship-launched anti-ship sub-sonic cruise missile version of Nirbhay within the next 12-18 months. The research and development for this missile have been completed, and the fabrication process is currently underway.
The ship-based sub-sonic cruise missile will be available in two variants: Land Attack Cruise Missile (LACM) and Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM). DRDO has already developed a Universal Vertical Launch Module (UVLM) that can accommodate both ship-based sub-sonic and supersonic cruise missiles like BrahMos.
Equipped with INS/GPS navigation and terminal guidance with an RF seeker, the Nirbhay missile has a planned range extension of 1000 km. It can fly at altitudes ranging from 500 meters to 4 kilometres and is capable of carrying 24 different types of weapons, adaptable to various mission requirements.
Notably, DRDO has already successfully tested the submarine-launched variant of the Nirbhay missile, demonstrating its versatility and potential for naval applications.
The upcoming developmental trials of the ship-launched Nirbhay missile mark a significant milestone in India’s indigenous missile development program. The successful development and deployment of this missile will enhance the Indian Navy’s strike capabilities and bolster its strategic deterrence.
