The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is poised to take the next step in the development of the Futuristic Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) but awaits the issuance of Preliminary Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQRs) from the Indian Army. Following the Defence Acquisition Council’s (DAC) Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) accorded on September 3, 2024, the FRCV program is now ready to progress toward its next stages.

The FRCV is a cornerstone of the Indian Army’s modernization efforts, designed to replace its aging tank fleet and provide enhanced operational capabilities for future conflicts. The PSQRs, which outline the operational and technical requirements of the FRCV, are a critical step in defining the project’s scope and ensuring alignment with the Army’s strategic objectives.

Once the Army issues the PSQRs, the following steps in the procurement process will unfold:

  1. Expression of Interest (EoI): The Ministry of Defence will release an EoI to solicit proposals from eligible developers.
  2. Request for Proposal (RFP): Following a review of responses to the EoI, a detailed RFP will be issued to shortlisted vendors or development agencies (DAs).
  3. Final Selection of Development Agencies: A rigorous evaluation process will lead to the selection of DAs tasked with the FRCV’s design and development.
  4. Prototype Design and Development: The selected DAs will then commence work on creating prototypes, with an ambitious timeline to deliver results within four years.

The FRCV program envisions a platform that incorporates cutting-edge technologies, including enhanced mobility, survivability, and firepower, to meet the demands of modern battlefield environments. The design is expected to feature modularity, enabling the integration of various weapons and subsystems tailored to specific mission requirements.

The DRDO, as one of the potential DAs, has already initiated groundwork for the program, leveraging its expertise in armored vehicle design and indigenous technology development. The organization’s involvement aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in defense under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

This program is set to invigorate India’s defense industrial base, offering opportunities for collaboration between DRDO, private sector players, and MSMEs. The development of the FRCV will not only boost the Indian Army’s capabilities but also position India as a global player in advanced armored vehicle technology.
