China’s latest stealth fighter jet, the J-31B, appears ready to enter military service based on a promotional video released by its developer, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC).

The FC-31 Gyrfalcon, now officially designated J-31B, is expected to complement the J-20, China’s most advanced operational stealth fighter. The video, posted by state broadcaster CCTV, showcases a computer-generated image of the J-31B featuring a side weapon bay carrying two missiles.

Analysts believe the designation change and the weapon bay design signify the J-31B’s readiness for deployment. Military analyst Fu Qianshao says the new designation indicates the jet has met military service requirements.

Another analyst, Shi Yinghui, highlights the significance of the side weapon bays. He notes that each bay can carry two missiles, exceeding the capabilities of the US F-22 Raptor and China’s J-20, which can only carry one missile per side bay. This design, according to Shi, would “significantly enhance its combat capabilities” and increase its firepower in close-quarters engagements.

The news comes after the Pakistan Air Force chief expressed interest in acquiring the FC-31 Gyrfalcon earlier this year.
