In Punjab’s Ferozepur sector, a BSF jawan accidentally crossed the international border and went to Pakistan, after which Pakistani Rangers took him into custody. According to sources, this incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Jawan was identified as Constable PK Singh of the 182nd BSF battalion, who was on duty near a farm near the Indo-Pak border. During routine movement, PK Singh inadvertently crossed the Indian border fence and entered Pakistani territory, where he was detained by Pakistan Rangers across the Ferozepur border. PK Singh was in uniform and had his service rifle with him. According to intelligence sources, the BSF battalion has shifted from Srinagar to Mamdot.

On Wednesday morning, farmers took combines and went to harvest wheat through the gate on the fencing. Two BSF jawans (called Kisan Guards) accompanied them to monitor the farmers. Due to the heat, a BSF jawan sat under the shade of a tree. The tree was planted in Pakistan’s border across the zero line. The jawan was not aware of this. The Pakistani farmer saw that the BSF jawan was sitting inside the Pakistani border. The said farmer informed the Pak Rangers about this. The Pakistani Rangers who came from hiding detained the BSF jawan and also snatched his rifle. After the jawan was taken into custody, the Indian Army and Pakistan Rangers started a flag meeting to resolve the matter and ensure the release of the soldier.

Sources said that the talks are still going on, but the soldier has not been handed back yet. They said that efforts are on to ensure the safe and early return of the soldier. Such inadvertent border crossings by soldiers or civilians are not uncommon and are usually resolved through established military protocols. Those detained are usually sent back after a procedural flag meeting. However, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir has strained bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, complicating what is a normal cross-border incident.
