The Kalyani Group has recently emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) in the Indian Army’s procurement program for the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) 155x52mm artillery gun, while the Tata Group has been designated as the second-lowest bidder (L2). This contract represents a major milestone in India’s Indigenous defence manufacturing efforts, particularly as ATAGS is poised to become the backbone of India’s artillery modernization strategy.
With a substantial order of 307 units, 184 of which will be manufactured by Kalyani Group, the company is well-positioned to further establish itself as a leading player in global artillery systems, buoyed by a recent order for 84 ATAGS units from Armenia. The deal with Armenia marked the gun’s first international export, setting the stage for more foreign sales as the Kalyani Group holds talks with multiple countries interested in the ATAGS platform.
Officials from the Kalyani Group have emphasized that the ATAGS incorporates a superior computer system, enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) for optimal firing solutions, aiming precision, and operational ease. According to these officials, ATAGS stands out due to its modern technological foundation; whereas many artillery guns in the market are based on platforms developed 30-40 years ago, ATAGS has been designed from the ground up using contemporary technologies. This approach not only ensures the system’s relevance today but also enables it to adapt to future advancements, a challenge for older systems.
Kalyani Group has positioned the ATAGS as one of the most cost-effective artillery systems in its class. With its AI-enabled computer system, the ATAGS offers performance that is typically expected from higher-priced artillery units. The Group has highlighted that its design, manufacturing process, and integration of advanced electronics contribute to its cost-effectiveness, making it a strong contender against older, established systems on the international market.
The company has been vocal about its confidence in ATAGS’s pricing strategy, which it believes will make it the preferred choice for armed forces around the world seeking both modern technology and cost savings. Speaking to defence portal idrw.org, Kalyani Group officials expressed optimism, stating that ATAGS is likely to outshine its competitors in the global market by offering the best price-to-performance ratio.
The recent deal with Armenia, valued at approximately $155 million, has already brought international recognition to the ATAGS program. This order not only demonstrated the platform’s capability but also solidified Kalyani Group’s reputation on the global defence stage.
