REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGE

Mumbai-based InspeCity Space Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the prestigious iDEX Prime X Challenge of Innovations for Defence Space Agency (DSA). The company has been recognized for its cutting-edge contributions to two critical areas of space technology: the development of a Space-Grade Robotic Arm with Ground Control for Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTV) and an Intelligent Object Identification System integrating Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and Electro-Optical (EO) sensors.

The iDEX Prime X Challenge, a flagship initiative under the Ministry of Defence’s Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program, is aimed at encouraging private sector participation in developing niche technologies for defense applications. The DSA, tasked with safeguarding India’s space assets, posed the challenge to design a robotic arm that could perform complex tasks in orbit while being remotely operated from the ground.

The space-grade robotic arm developed by InspeCity is designed for deployment on Orbital Transfer Vehicles (OTVs). These vehicles are critical for satellite deployment, repositioning, and other in-orbit operations. The robotic arm features:

  • Precision Handling: Capable of delicate maneuvers, ensuring safe and accurate handling of satellite components.
  • Ground-Control Capabilities: Operable remotely from Earth, allowing for real-time adjustments and interventions.
  • High Durability: Engineered to withstand the harsh conditions of space, including extreme temperatures and radiation.
  • Multi-Functional Design: Suitable for tasks such as satellite docking, payload adjustments, debris removal, and maintenance.

The development of this indigenous robotic arm marks a significant leap forward in India’s space defense and operational autonomy. Key benefits include:

  • Satellite Servicing: Enabling in-orbit repairs and maintenance, extending satellite lifespans and reducing costs.
  • Orbital Maneuvering: Supporting the deployment and repositioning of satellites in specific orbits.
  • Space Debris Management: Assisting in the removal or relocation of defunct satellites and debris to mitigate collision risks.
  • Enhanced Security: Strengthening India’s ability to safeguard its space assets in an increasingly contested domain.

Intelligent Object Identification System with LIDAR and EO Sensors

In addition to the robotic arm, InspeCity has been selected to develop an Intelligent Object Identification System. This advanced system combines LIDAR and Electro-Optical (EO) sensors to deliver:

  • High-Precision Object Detection and Tracking: Capable of identifying and classifying objects in space with exceptional accuracy.
  • Advanced Analytics for Situational Awareness: Providing detailed data for decision-making in satellite management and space traffic coordination.
  • Adaptability for Defense and Civil Applications: Enabling use in defense reconnaissance, satellite health monitoring, and navigation systems.

The system is designed to enhance India’s capabilities in space domain awareness, a critical area for ensuring national security and strategic superiority in outer space.
