In a landmark event strengthening defense technology cooperation, India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Implementation (MoI) for the co-development of the UNICORN mast under their ongoing Defense Technology Cooperation framework. The ceremony took place at the Embassy of India in Tokyo, attended by prominent dignitaries from both nations.
The MoI was signed by Ambassador Sibi George of India and HE Mr. Ishikawa Takeshi, Commissioner of the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), Japan. The event was also graced by Cmde Digvijay Singh Pathania, representing the Indian Navy, and HE Mr. Fukunaga Tetsuro, Director General of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI).
The UNICORN mast is envisioned as a next-generation naval mast system integrating advanced radar, communication, and sensor technologies. Its co-development marks a critical step in leveraging the technological expertise of both nations to produce state-of-the-art equipment for naval platforms.
By stacking multiple antennas one on top of the other and covering the entire system with the radome, UNICORN can reduce the radar cross section (RCS) of the antennas, which increases stealth by making it more difficult for any enemy to detect naval vessels.
The UNICORN mast project is expected to pave the way for further collaborations in advanced defense technologies, including underwater systems, autonomous platforms, and cybersecurity. By fostering partnerships between their defense industries, India and Japan aim to enhance their technological edge while reinforcing the Indo-Pacific’s security architecture.
