The Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) is developing a cutting-edge Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) for India’s 5th generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) fighter jet program. This next-gen DFCC will feature a core processor offering nearly 25 times the computing power of the DFCCs seen on the Tejas Mk1A and the upcoming Tejas MkII aircraft.
In a modern fighter jet, the DFCC plays a crucial role in managing flight control systems and ensuring the aircraft’s stability, manoeuvrability, and overall performance. It acts as the brain behind the aircraft’s flight control operations, processing data from sensors and input devices and sending real-time commands to the aircraft’s control surfaces, engines, and avionics.
The AMCA’s DFCC will require significant computational power to handle the jet’s advanced features, including stealth characteristics, sensor fusion, electronic warfare systems, and its ability to operate in highly contested airspace. This level of complexity demands more advanced hardware that can handle real-time data processing at a much faster rate than previous generations of fighter jets.
With a core processor delivering 25 times more computing power than the DFCC on the Tejas Mk1A and Tejas MkII, the AMCA’s DFCC will be designed to support next-gen features such as AI-enhanced autonomy, Advanced Stealth Management and Multi-Role Capability.
Given that the AMCA will be in service for decades, its DFCC will be future-proof, capable of supporting upgrades over the next 20 years. This requires a forward-thinking approach to hardware and software integration, ensuring the jet remains at the cutting edge of aviation technology.
The AMCA’s ability to support software patches and capability enhancements throughout its service life will make it highly adaptable, ensuring it can respond to emerging threats and integrate with evolving defence technologies, such as unmanned systems and enhanced electronic warfare suites.
