At a recent defense exhibition in Morocco, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) showcased a customized version of its Wheeled Armoured Platform (WHAP) 8×8, revealing several major changes from the Indian Army variant. The modified WHAP 8×8, tailored to Moroccan requirements, reflects both structural and functional adaptations designed to enhance operational suitability for the Moroccan Armed Forces.

The WHAP 8×8 is a multi-role armored vehicle developed by TASL in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and tailored initially for the Indian Army’s requirements. The platform is versatile, capable of fulfilling various roles from reconnaissance to infantry transport and potentially even as an anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) carrier.

Key Modifications in the Moroccan WHAP 8×8 Variant

A larger rear entry point is advantageous for scenarios requiring rapid response or emergency evacuation, enhancing overall tactical flexibility.

Seating Arrangement:

One of the most notable differences in the Moroccan WHAP 8×8 is the change in the seating layout. In the Indian Army’s version, soldiers sit back-to-back, providing a broader field of view outwards and better coordination for immediate deployment.

However, in the Moroccan variant, soldiers face each other in an opposite seating arrangement, creating a more conventional troop-carrying setup. This configuration may offer improved communication within the squad during transit and can also accommodate specific requirements of Moroccan operational doctrine.

Left-Hand Drive:

Another significant change in the Moroccan WHAP 8×8 is the switch to a left-hand drive configuration, as reported by idrw.org in its earlier coverage. This alteration is crucial as Morocco, like most of the world, follows a right-hand traffic system.

The adaptation not only aligns with local driving practices but also reflects TASL’s responsiveness to the unique requirements of international clients, demonstrating the WHAP’s versatility and TASL’s ability to customize platforms based on regional demands.

Rear Door Design:

The Moroccan variant features a noticeably larger rear door compared to the Indian model. This expanded door could facilitate quicker troop deployment, a higher degree of accessibility for personnel, and smoother loading/unloading of cargo or equipment.

TASL’s success in securing interest from Morocco could pave the way for more collaborations with other countries in Africa and the Middle East. The WHAP 8×8’s ability to incorporate regional specifications, combined with its robust mobility and protection capabilities, makes it a competitive alternative in the global 8×8 armored vehicle market.

The WHAP’s deployment in various environments also aligns with India’s broader defense export goals, as the government pushes for an increase in defense exports under its “Make in India” initiative. By customizing defense solutions for international clients, TASL can play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s position as a defense exporter.
