The Indian Air Force (IAF) has temporarily grounded its Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) fleet following a precautionary water landing in Bihar. The incident occurred on October 2, when a Dhruv helicopter deployed for flood relief operations experienced a technical failure.

According to officials, the IAF has suspended training activities involving ALHs until the cause of the incident is thoroughly investigated. Only operational tasks are currently being carried out using the remaining Dhruv helicopters.

An eyewitness account of the incident revealed that the helicopter’s glass panes were cracked, and the blades and other parts were damaged. The pilot, faced with a “wobbling aircraft,” had no choice but to make a controlled landing in the nearest body of water.

While the exact nature of the technical failure remains under investigation, the IAF is taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its personnel and equipment. “Regular flying activity will resume soon,” an official stated.

The grounding of the Dhruv fleet is a significant setback for the IAF, as the ALH is a versatile helicopter used for various roles, including search and rescue, transportation, and combat support. The investigation into the incident will be crucial in determining the necessary corrective actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
