India’s journey towards high-speed transportation could soon become a reality, thanks to the innovative work being done by TuTr Hyperloop, a deep tech startup incubated at IIT Madras. This startup is spearheading efforts to create a full-scale hyperloop infrastructure capable of reaching speeds of 600 km/h.
With Chennai’s strong technological ecosystem and supportive local community, the city is poised to become a global hub for hyperloop development. The 410-meter hyperloop test track at IIT Madras’ Discovery campus in Thaiyur is set to be the first of its kind in the world.
TuTr Hyperloop has already made significant strides in its research and development. The team has successfully developed a linear induction motor prototype, which is currently undergoing rigorous testing on the test track. The next crucial step involves developing the levitation technology for the hyperloop pod, which is expected to begin testing by the end of the month.
Dr. Aravind S Bharadwaj, Founder Director of TuTr Hyperloop, emphasized that the initial focus is not solely on achieving the highest possible speed but on making hyperloop technology commercially viable for practical applications in India. He envisions hyperloop as a potential augmentation to the existing Metro Rail network, creating high-speed corridors for efficient transportation.
Addressing the key challenge of cost, Dr. Bharadwaj explained that by covering 60 km in 15 minutes, hyperloop could offer a competitive solution to existing transportation modes. The pod could be designed to carry 30-40 passengers, providing a convenient and efficient mode of travel.
Beyond passenger transportation, hyperloop could also be used for freight transportation, such as moving containers from Chennai Port or transporting materials in mining operations without disturbing ecologically sensitive areas.
TuTr Hyperloop has received significant support from both government grants and private companies. The project has garnered funding and expertise from leading organizations like L&T, Arcelor Mittal, Hindalco, Dassault, Ansys, and TI.
As TuTr Hyperloop continues to make progress, India’s dream of high-speed transportation is inching closer to reality. The successful development and implementation of hyperloop technology could revolutionize travel and logistics in the country.
