India and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen their military collaboration, with a particular focus on the maintenance and upgrade of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) operated Su-30MKM fighter fleet. Under the proposed agreement, the RMAF’s Su-30MKM fleet could be overhauled and upgraded with Indian-made systems. This cooperation would not only benefit both countries but also strengthen their strategic partnership in the region.

In addition to the Su-30MKM upgrades, both countries are exploring other areas of cooperation in the maintenance of Russian-origin fighter jets. The RMAF has expressed interest in acquiring the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile, a joint Indo-Russian venture.

Furthermore, the RMAF is closely monitoring India’s own Super-30 upgrade program for its Su-30MKI fleet. This program includes significant enhancements such as a new AESA radar, which could provide valuable insights for the RMAF’s upgrade plans.

It’s worth noting that India has already been providing spare parts to the RMAF’s Su-30MKM fleet, including tyres from an Indian company. This existing cooperation serves as a foundation for the proposed expansion of military collaboration.

The deepening of military ties between India and Malaysia is a positive development that has the potential to enhance regional security and stability. By working together, the two countries can leverage their respective strengths and capabilities to address common challenges and promote peace and prosperity in the region.
