The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to enhance the underwater capabilities of the Indian Navy’s Kilo-class submarines with the upgraded USHUS-2 sonar suite. This state-of-the-art system, developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), will replace the older USHUS sonars on the remaining 3 Kilo-class submarines.

Currently, five of the nine frontline Kilo-class submarines, also known as EKM-class, are equipped with the earlier version of the USHUS sonar system out of which Two have been retired or transferred.

The upgrade to USHUS-2 will equip submarines S55, S57, and S59 with the latest sonar technology. USHUS-2 is a comprehensive sonar suite comprising passive sonar, active sonar, intercept sonar, obstacle avoidance sonar, and underwater telephony. It represents a significant leap forward in sonar technology, offering enhanced detection, tracking, and classification capabilities.

Bharat Electronics is responsible for the production of the USHUS-2 sonar suite. The system is currently undergoing installation on Indian Navy platforms.

This upgrade is expected to bolster the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and provide these submarines with a significant technological edge.
