In a strategic move to deepen defence ties, India has proposed a modified version of its Nilgiri-class frigate to the Brazilian Navy. This offer comes as Brazil is expanding its naval capabilities with the Tamandaré-class frigate program.

Currently, Brazil operates one Tamandaré-class frigate, the ‘Jerônimo de Albuquerque’, with three more under construction. Built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, these ships have a displacement of around 3,500 tons. In contrast, the Indian-built Nilgiri-class frigate is significantly larger, boasting a displacement of 6670 tons.

Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), the shipyard responsible for the Nilgiri-class frigates, has reportedly offered Transfer of Technology (ToT) to Brazil, enabling the South American nation to locally manufacture these advanced warships.

While the Brazilian Navy is considering procuring 4-6 new frigates, the primary motivation behind this acquisition appears to be integrating the BrahMos cruise missile into its coastal defence system. Brazil has expressed keen interest in acquiring this potent weapon system.

This potential deal signifies a major step forward in India’s defence exports and underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. It also highlights India’s emergence as a global shipbuilding and defence technology hub.
