India is gearing up to introduce smaller nuclear reactors into the energy market by modifying its existing 220 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). This strategic move aims to pave the way for private sector participation in the nuclear power industry.

According to RB Grover, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, the existing PHWR design, which powers several nuclear plants across the country, is undergoing modifications to be adapted as Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs). Grover emphasized that the changes are incremental and minimal, with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) currently finalizing the necessary drawings.

This development marks a significant step towards India’s goal of expanding nuclear power generation and promoting private investment in the sector. By converting larger reactors into smaller, more manageable units, the government aims to create opportunities for private companies to enter the nuclear energy market.

While specific details about the timeline for the conversion process and the subsequent handover to the private sector are yet to be announced, this initiative underscores India’s commitment to harnessing nuclear power as a clean and reliable energy source.
