The Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi-30MKI, a formidable asset, is set to undergo a transformative upgrade, dubbed the “Super Sukhoi”. This ambitious project, which has been in the works for over a decade, aims to elevate the aircraft’s capabilities to rival and surpass its Chinese counterpart, the J-16.
Initially envisioned as a beneficiary of the now-defunct Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program with Russia, the Super Sukhoi’s development trajectory shifted when India opted out. Russia subsequently proposed the Su-30SM upgrade, featuring the potent AL-41F engine. However, India has charted its course, prioritizing indigenous technology.
The Super Sukhoi upgrade encompasses a comprehensive overhaul of 51 systems, with a strong emphasis on domestic components. This strategic shift is aimed at reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and fostering self-reliance in the defence sector.
A key highlight of the upgrade is the integration of a domestically developed GaN-based AESA radar, promising superior performance compared to the J-16’s GaA counterpart. Coupled with an advanced mission control system, this enhancement significantly bolsters the aircraft’s situational awareness and target acquisition capabilities.
While the J-16 boasts a composite airframe, India is exploring RCS reduction measures for the Super Sukhoi, although the extent of composite panel integration remains unclear. Nevertheless, the overall package, including upgraded avionics, weapons, and electronic warfare systems, is poised to give the Super Sukhoi a decisive edge over its Chinese rival.
The Super Sukhoi project represents a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-sufficiency in aerospace technology. By equipping the Sukhoi-30MKI with cutting-edge Indigenous systems, India aims to secure its position as a regional military power and safeguard its airspace against evolving threats.
